Investing Through the Election: How to Advise Clients During Political Uncertainty

In This Episode

About the Episode:

During an election season, clients may be tempted to make investment decisions based on politics instead of facts. This data-driven discussion will teach you how to protect your clients’ investments and keep them focused on their goals during times of political uncertainty.

Join host, Dave Alison, CFP®, EA, BPC, President and Founding Partner of C2P and founder, CEO, and lead advisor of Alison Wealth Management, and special guest, Dr. Apollo Lupescu, Vice President at Dimensional Fund Advisors. Drawing upon extensive data analysis, Lupescu provides a framework to help you have informed, non-partisan conversations with your clients about making informed investing decisions during election cycles.

Key topics covered include:

  • Historical market performance: Hard data on market performance during prior election years, dispelling the notion that uncertainty around elections is inherently bad for markets.
  • Presidential impact analysis: An objective look at how markets have fared under different presidents and political parties, revealing no clear patterns favoring one side.
  • Unified government analysis: A powerful natural experiment analyzing unified government control, where data shows essentially identical average market returns under Democratic and Republican leadership.
  • Client conversation strategies: Strategies for initiating productive client dialogues, acknowledging emotions while focusing discussions on evidence rather than partisan politics.
  • Visual resources for advisors: Visual exhibits and talking points advisors can utilize to provide clients reassuring facts and perspective ahead of election volatility.

With Lupescu’s guidance, you’ll learn how to proactively ease your clients’ minds, reinforce the importance of long-term investing principles, and discourage politically-motivated trading that could derail their financial plans.
